Everyone.

Would Phaing have any reason to want to maybe 'liberate' some d'Angelines she has heard want to come home but can't for one reason or another? Maybe she hears a rumor from a traveling merchant and a name she knows pops up, a name she can't ignore? Maybe once they get to Krim, she could get kidnapped then (or a member of their group?) I dunno, just some ideas so they (the rest of the group) aren't trying to blindly find their way around or to Krim and seem a bit believable...

A departure from the idea of a kidnapping kicking this whole thing off has come up, and I'm all ears. Nothing is set in stone yet, not by any means.

This.... is something that never occurred to me.
Phaing does of course know the name of that Missionary, Armand, he is the one that inspired her to come to Terre d'Ange in the 1st place. However, its been near to a decade since she has seen or heard of him. She would be surprised to find him still alive, and that enclave of Angelines is unknown to her.
It is a small warrior-culture in a very remote corner of the world, free of Fangohr or anyone else's domination... and a wonderful little source of Knights coming in to save the day when all seems lost. It was intended as a fail-safe in case the Heroes get in over their heads
However, someone must know of it...
You have a good point there.
Most likely, there are 2 sources of information on them outside Krim-
1- Ephesians, their outpost is the closest one to Kalamach Cin. Through them, it might be possible to hear about Armand.
2- Rumors brought to Vralia by wandering Tatars, of a source of very high grade steel made by a people who are just too damn pretty.
Katya could be just the person to give us that news.
Katya Alkaev wrote:
Maybe somebody else wants to liberate said d'Angelines who want to come home and Phaing hears they are going to Krim and decides to tag along/lead them there?

The "Liberation" might come in a flood of people if you can convince them that there would be no retribution upon their return. Not thousands, but too many for any one ship to carry. The Lords won't want to abandon their seat of power. No matter how minor, their power is absolute here and they won't want to go to a place where they would barely be recognized as peers at all.

Now.... if anyone is going to Krim for any reason, and they can't be talked out of it, Phaing will have to go. She won't want to let any of these nice d'Angeline get themselves involved in that hellish situation without being along to do anything she can to keep them out of trouble.
And I do mean anything.

I like the idea of liberating the D'Angelines in Krim and welcoming/encouraging them back to Terre D'Ange.

----here is where I will list some of my ideas for the NPCs in Krim-

Dramatis Personae

of uncertain location-

Ib Melchior {aka; the mutt} of uncertain parentage, arrived as a slave to a Gotlander merchant and went unclaimed after his owner was summarily executed for "improper haggling". Ib's survival mechanism is to be the total sycophant, servile in every way and willing to do whatever it takes to appease anyone. At first, he tried to eek out a living by following in his master's footsteps; a peddler that travels back and forth between all corners of Krim. He wasn't doing very well because he can't really stand up for himself of the value of his goods.... however, he does have value as the only man that can travel freely among all these hostile lands. He carries messages and returns with answers, sometimes memorized.
Ib is outwardly subservient, inwardly his resentment simmers and is approaching a boiling point. He dreams of the day when he can hurt his clients badly, or simply ruin one of them.
His outstanding trait is memory, and so he has a good command of all the languages spoken on Krim, even Tiberian.

Gursuf

Dogjan Lanzari; Exiled to this post for seducing a Governor's daughter, Dogjan has deteriorated during his tenure here and looks 15 years older than his age of 38. He married the disgraced daughter (not that he had a choice) and she died in childbirth 3 years later. Embittered, this man despises his d'Angeline neighbors all the more for their Romantic inclinations.
Dogjan is harsh enough to survive here and keep control over his Tatar mercenaries and all the crooked merchants that infest his little domain. However, he is going downhill fast. Currently, he is known for his ability to demolish 2 pounds of caviar at a sitting, washed down with 2 bottles of locally made wine, and on most days he also goes through a bottle of Brandy. The shape of his body and his florid complexion reveal the state of his health, and he has lost all hope of ever leaving Krim.

Vano Bulba; the commander of the Tatar Guards. Dogjan's decline give him ever-expanding opportunities to enrich himself, and his Khan. Unlike his Pasha, Vano has hopes of leaving Krim and even hopes to do so a wealthy man... but only so long as Pasha Lanzari remains in nominal command.

Yazmina Lanzari; as the Daughter that killed her mother, she is resented by her father, and unable to defend herself due to a birth defect that renders her mute. This 16 year-old does live a secret life; she reads and writes )very passionately and skillfully) and has built connections among the few Ephesian Guards in this house. Her dream is to escape her Father's half-formed plans to marry her off to a Tatar and instead find her way back to Ephesium. Yazmina is prepared to be ruthless in accomplishing this goal.

The population of Gursuf is 11,000, including 2,000 Tatar, 600 of which are warriors.

Ramius Tolbukhin; the Arch-Fiend. Charismatic, vaguely psychotic and wholly evil, he is also pushing 50 and knows that time is running out. His dream is to return to Vralia at the head of a powerful army and place a Demon on the throne... and let that Demon subvert and destroy that vulgar new religion. He was opposed to the Yeshuites and their increasingly omnipresent influence or the lives of all Vralians. Exiled after making an impassioned public speech against the concept of Original Sin, he went a little mad, and decided to go fully over to the sin and damnation that he had been told was his fate.
So be it, he came here by a roundabout route across inland seas and the darkest corners of Khebel im-Akkad. When he arrived here, he as down to a just a score of fanatical follower, half a dozen of which are Vralian, and one odd addition....

Hayt ; a Demon in possession of a human body. You would not be able to tell by looking at him, what you see would be a paraplegic boy of about 13, until you get close enough to see that the skin is sallow and wrinkled as an old man's would be, and his hair is white rather than blond. And there there are the eyes, a non-relective black that seem to be doors to nothingness.
Ramius thinks he was rather clever, tricking the Demon by letting him in to posses the boy, one that was also a bit damaged in the brain as well as the spine. Hayt bides his time, and empowers the Cult with little tricks until the day comes when he can seize a more suitable body.
(note; all Cultists wear or have tattooed into their skins a charm that makes them impossible for the Fallen Spirit to take control of them. Furthermore, Hayt is not a power in Focalor's league, he can only possess the false or the faithless... or the mentally defenseless. )

Malventum-

Lucius Glabarus Crassus; Governor of Krim and Master of the Dark Sea...and many other equally fallacious titles, but don't let that fool you. The Tiberians, when they were worthy of the Empire they built, were very no-nonsense people and Lucious prides himself on being that same way. He is one of the more stable and capable leaders in Krim, but he has so little influence outside his city-state that most of the common folk of Krim are barely even aware that Malventum exists. The main contact with the outside world is through the small, hidden port, but the contacts made through that route can be insteresting...

Ivory Raven { Xiàngyá wūyā } Kai Shek ;. Ivory skin, Raven hair, anything that fits so well is probably an assumed name. She is an inventor, one that fled Ch'in for reasons of her own, and arrived as part of a small trade expedition. She has remained here for over a decade, and her most successful work has endeared her Malventum's tiny army, by giving them wings of a sort.
In modern terms, Hang-Gliders, huge kites made of bamboo and silk that can carry one man, a triple crossbow and about 20 pounds of flechettes or Greek fire. Some two dozen have been constructed and have men to fly them... a closely guarded secret. This may also be what caused Raven to flee Ch'in, as the ability to fly over a wall would be of devastating benefit to Ch'in's enemies and of little good to themselves.

Only about 5,000 people live in Malventum and the steeply terraced fields around the "city". There are only 2 warships, one of which has a standing crew at any one time, and the regular Army is a Century of 80 men, a mixed group of archers and 'foot-lancers' (think Swiss Pikemen) and 4 more such centuries can be assembled in an emergency from reservists with good training but no actual experience.

---This will continue later so I can cover the more complex ones in Kalamach Cin and Fangohr. That will be a much longer entry--

Excellent!
Some are more worthy than others, of course.

Kalamach Cin

Geoffroi Wischard Merovian; The elderly patriarch of this settlement, he is the only one left that remembers arriving here, but not his birth in Camlach. Geoffroi has served as courtier, Knight, head of the army, and Gloire ... the last title being the leader of the ruling council of Knights. He then retired to build and maintain a Library, a pursuit largely ignored by his fellows in the Knighthood and the Government, and one that cost him 90% of his eyesight.
This man is barely able to get around and is "blind in one eye and can't see out the other", but he is immensely respected in this community and is also known as "the memory" of his people. Geoffroi is at that point in life where only the very oldest and the most recent of his memories are clearest.

Roul d'Viars; The current Gloire is in his mid-40s and claims to be in his prime. His title is a legacy of the Glory Seekers, and is not hereditary. The man who is best able to succeed in battle is judged best able to lead the d'Angeline people in this harsh place. He is certainly a warrior of terrible prowess, this man can still hit a door with his throwing ax from 30 paces and stand an even chance of putting the ax clean through that door! Tatar and Skadli are said to secretly regret every encounter they have had with him.
Roul is a good man and a great Knight, charismatic and popular... yet he is lacking in certain areas that the leader of a realm should have, even a small one such as this. He is painfully aware of this and often turns to his council, or Geoffroi, or one other for advice...

Diot Weygand; the senior Priestess of Elua. She felt threatened by Armand and is the one that advised Roul to throw him in the Dungeon. She has been "tweaking" her religion in certain ways, and Armand was an uncomfortable reminder that Diot has strayed. Not that she regrets it, Cassiel was already held in the highest regard by these d'Angeline before she was born. This Priestess has simply elevated him to Elua's right-hand man and blended in Kushiel's stern ways when it comes to morality and dealing with both the enemy and in dealing with the lower classes.

Kalamach Cin comprises the eastern "arm" of Krim, home to about 25,000 people. 95% of those are descended from those who lived here before the arrival of the d'Angelines. These are mainly serfs who work the farms and the mines that provide sustenance and wealth for the realm. The remaining 1200 are either pure-blood or half-blooded d'Angeline and nearly all consider themselves peers of one sort of another, and behave accordingly.
The relationship is not so one-sided as it may sound, methods of farming and animal husbandry as well as healing has double the life-span of the locals, and their numbers.

There are 77 Knights, each of which is allocated a Squire and 1-3 'Footmen'. That is a misnomer, the Footmen ride horses on campaign but generally fight dismounted. This is the only rank that a non-d'Angeline can aspire to in this army and competition is fierce.
There is but one warship here, a frightful cross between a Galley and a Galleon, called a Galliase.

--- this will conclude tomorrow or the next day with Fangohr itself --

Fangohr

Rudiger von Sieger; the Supreme leader of Greater Krim, also called the Furor on the Battlefield. "Of Victory", his family has ruled for half a century, this latest scion is but 30 and assumed rulership 4 years ago after his father died with a mistress too feisty for him, or poisoned by his wife according to some. Rudiger tries to be all things to all men, and is happiest as a warrior. He does many things well.... not including riding. Rumor has it that he once fell off his horse 3 times in one day, while sober.
He is a firm believer in honorable behavior on the battlefield and ruthless rulership at home. He is not cruel, but fearful of the consequences of slack rule and the chaos that would ensue. As most Skaldi do, he believes there are 2 kinds of people in this world; slaves and masters. He also believes that the well-being of the slaves, and any conquered people, is the responsibility of the masters, and any man disputing that will leave the throne room with several new lumps on his head.
Rudiger has been in one pitched battle and several skirmishes, and killed 7 men. Two of those were Skaldi that questioned his orders. If he has a fatal flaw, this man is becoming more short-tempered with those that would dispute him every day, speaking loudly and quickly to put everyone on the defensive. His behavior can only be mollified by 3 of the people listed below-

Kertu von Sieger; the Furor's mother. Titled 'her wisdom' by the Skaldi, she is the Gray Eminence behind the throne. She is also the reason why Rudiger is unmarried, no woman that can stand her son for any amount of time has met with her approval yet.
She believes that the Caerdicci people are the apex of civilization and culture, speaks the language as is responsible for making sure that her son does as well. Kertu has an even more firm belief in Law over Chaos than Rudiger does, and was responsible for the decisions that lead to that Cult being hounded out of Skaldi lands... although she has no idea how depraved they really are.
Not everyone in Fangohr is happy about that, see below.

Odoaker Markwart; Governor of the interior, North Quarter, which would technically make him just one of four Governors. This man is somewhat more than that, as his area of responsibility includes the fortified area called the Isthmus of Perekop. If the Tatar were to launch a full invasion of Krim, this is where they would have to go. Markwart means border-ward, and he lives up to the name, and old-time hard liner that opposes anything that would reduce the military power of his realm.
He frequently visits the City and sternly opposes doing anything that might antagonize the Tatar Hordes.
His only concern with the d'Angeline is that they don't let the Tatar in the back door, or allow themselves to be corrupted by the Ephesians... and he occasionally goes to Gursuf to have a little skirmish with the Tatar mercenaries there.

Ingomar Bernward; At odds with the conventions of this Skadli community, Ingo is a merchant of note, and a subtle man in many ways. He is not pleased that Ramius was exiled and that there is still a price on his head, those magical trinkets were lucrative merchandise. Now Fangohr's greatest rivals in trade, the Ephesians have him.
This is not a good situation, so this famous Merchant is in touch with the Priesthood of Kalamach Cin as he attempts to have the cultists kidnapped and held there in more neutral territory.
And may the defense of the realm take the hindmost, there is money to be made here!

Abalberto Caelestis An assassin and an informer of the Ceardicci sort. He is also a member of the Unseen Guild and has lost contact with the Guid since his contact was lost at sea. Adalberto is starting to loose hope that he will ever hear from his Guild again, and now ruthlessly carries out any orders from the von Siegers in hopes of earning permission to leave Krim someday.
One coupe that would guarantee him his freedom would be to eliminate that Cult, yet even his skills are probably not enough to deal with them. Until he can find an ally or ten, this man will continue to serve his King in ways that none of his other warriors (blunt instruments to a man) can accomplish.

Between 70-80 thousand people live in the four wards of Krim, 15 thousand of those in Fangohr itself. Near to a third of those are Skaldi, the rest are either Vralian slaves or native Krim who now work their ancestral lands as serfs to the Skaldi.
Theoretically, every Skaldi male is a warrior. In truth, far less are fit for duty, and many of those are on ships. 3,000 men can be mustered quickly, and half of those would be needed at Perekop just to hold the line if the Tatar threatened to attack. In another fortnight an additional 3,000 could be gathered, at great cost to the economy and the harvest.
80% of the troops fight on foot in massed formations that use caltrops and bolas to foil enemy Cavalry charges. They are also very good at slapping together fortifications, so much so that their rivals believe that its best to attack the Skaldi within 48 hours of their arrival in a given location.... or not at all.

There are 6 light warships and aheavy one in Fangohr Harbor. The number of state-sponsored Pirate ships present is totally unpredictable. There may be none, or there may be a dozen.

Top contenders for the coming Gladiatorial Tournament are Ranak the Beast, Mooker Gee and Tomas the Grabber.

Back to the kick-off-

the ship we need, Proud Monster, looks like this-
http://www.modelshipmaster.com/products ... 0ship%20(1).jpg

http://www.modelshipmaster.com/products ... 0ship%20(1).jpg

(note- those are not going to be cannon here, can't have boom-sticks and magic in the same world)

Its a small, sleek ship, just the sort Pirates would like, but its considerably larger than the Illyrian sort. That means it can work alone and is packed with fighting sailors. There are 5 Ballistae on each side, oversized Crossbow weapons that can fire a spear-sized arrow or a rock.

As yet, it's part in all this is uncertain. Will this be the ship we chase, or the ship our people use to reach Krim?

Captain Rand Stormbird - Elected for his ferocious ways in battle and his cunning, he leaves d'Angeline and Akkadian ships alone. Everyone needs a good port to sell what they have stolen in, and when there are no ships worth plundering then smuggling can also be profitable... especially with those two destinations.
He and his ship are tolerated, mainly by Soivale, but the Serenissiman and Sicilia are out for his blood.

Rence Walla- the 1st Mate is Alban, chosen for the position for his skills at handling a ship and for the fact that he never complains about anything. Ever. He simply does his job, and if told to throw women and children into the ocean or to put out a fire by himself without water, he just does it and looks for the next thing to take care of.

Nappy Groff - the only man to survive catching 40 winks while in the Crow's nest. A flatlander and one of the toughest men on the ship, he always gets the toughest jobs and succeeds more often than not. He does all this because he is particular about his share of the treasure; he likes fine art and has a very particular taste when it comes to such things. He also has an equally discerning eye for the ladies, and his gifts to them are effective at getting him what he wants from them.

Spooner Yegg - So named for the sliver spoon in his pocket, and his habbit of using it to sample whatever comes within arm's reach. Nobody is sure where he came from, and everyone knows why he is here. This man is a thief, and a damn good one. He is also so well known in half the Southern Sea that he can't hide anymore, this ship will someday divvy up shares in a port that never heard of him, and that will be when he takes his leave. Meanwhile, he does his chores, fights with minimal enthusiasm, and bides his time.

Change of plans-

I don't have a 3-day weekend this month after all.
But I do have 3 in November, go figure. So, I might not be starting this weekend after all, but I'd still like to try.

Well, I gave away all the surprises and twists as per how things are done here, and I got input from Deme and Evanesce... shall we finalize all of starting ingredients?
Are we gathering a group bent on exploration?
If so, who are they and how are they being funded, who do they answer to?

We can have more than one character each (I assume) so each of us could have one explorer/Scholar and one of the mercenary protectors.
hmm... speaking of classical JC adventures, it would almost be like one Phe'dre and one Joscelin each. ;)

I plan to bring Phaing and Hrolvath, the later because he will be helpful and to have someone for dialogue if (when) Phaing goes off on one of her tangents.

Is there anything else that anyone would like to resolve in addition to the above before we start?

Meanwhile, in the City of Elua-
Ripert Dupuy- Head of the Institut de Physique du Globe's department of eastern studies.
This Institute is one of several that is attempting to compete with the ancient Universities in Tiberium, as well as others in the City of Elua itself. It is neither small and exclusive, nor large & successful.
Master Dupuy chafes at the middling status of 'his' institute, and dreams of elevating it to a higher status... and correspondingly higher social status for himself. Some say he is courting madness with his single-minded pursuit of a breakthrough that will gain the notice of all Terre d'Ange.
A breakthrough in the in the study of the Physical World... geography ?
All eyes are turned Westwards, yet the Scholars of this place missed the boat (literally) and Ripert specializes in the opposite direction.

His dedication has paid off, he has just found a minor addition to the archives that has inspired him to form an expedition of his own. This missive is now circulating among the haunts of those who are adventurous and free of encumbrance.
ie; unemployed mercenaries. :O

Two different sorts of papers are produced-
Notice;
Clever warrior/scouts and broad-minded scholars wanted
for an extended and perilous journey of discovery.
Those with a working knowledge of Vralian and Skaldi ways and languages preferred.
Hazards unknown, constant danger is more likely than a safe return.
Honor, recognition and riches upon success.
Leave responses for Dupuy at (various locations)

That is the one that went public, to discourage the high-born fops and hangers-on that gum up the works on so many expeditions of this sort.

This is the one that is circulated among those Master Dupuy considers to be "in the know", reliable sorts.

I need solid, reliable people to scout a far corner of Europa that has been neglected since the fall of Tiber's Empire. Expenses will be covered and lavish reward can be expected on the return of the party.
A Wayward Priest has gone Missionary in a place called Krim, we would see him safely returned along with the knowledge he has gained about this mysterious place. All members of the expedition will be given a bonus if they keep a journal and record what they see along the way.
Time is of the essence, they must cross the Dark Sea before the storms of winter throw them back.
Send those who you think suitable to see me at my office after sunset each day this week.

-Master Ribert

And I do belive I am ready to start, tomorrow.

I was just thinking, would anyone like to take over some of the NPCs?
Or even flesh-out a location, like Gursuff or Malventum?

Let me know by PM or right here.
There is a lot of stuff here, and a lighter load plus some unpredictability would be appreciated.
